Post Office Club - The history

The Post Office Sports and Social Club opened in November 1977 at the main Post Office building in Slindon Street. The bar and social area were on the 3rd floor and regular functions were held on Saturday nights. The club made use of the canteen area and it was not unusual for attendances of 300 plus at some of the functions. Acts to play at the club included Screaming Lord Sutch and the legendary Wurzels.

In the late 80's Royal Mail brought in a policy that banned alcohol from being consumed on the premises. This led to the closure of the club. In the next few years the committee made several attempts to find new premises for the club, these included Moneyfields, North End Bowls club and the Trophy club in Copnor Road.

In November 1998 the committee secured the premises in which the club now sits. Six weeks later the club opened and 11 years later is busier and more vibrant than ever!!!

Although the original club opened in 1977, the social club has been in existence for more than 50 years and a handful of the Honorary Members have been involved since day one

When the club opened in 1977, the club adopted 2 charities - Downs Syndrome and
Autisic Children. Over 30 years later the club still raises monies for these charities and each year hands over a cheque for a couple of thousand pounds.
